Sport and Health

At ELABasel, sport and physical activity play a central role in our students’ education and wellbeing.

Our Physical Education curriculum encourages teamwork, perseverance and personal achievement, helping children develop a positive attitude towards a healthy, active lifestyle.

Alongside traditional sports, students also enjoy activities such as orienteering, which combine physical fitness with problem-solving and outdoor exploration. We further supplement our PE lessons with Enrichment clubs, as well as interschool competitions and events that inspire participation, sportsmanship and confidence in every student.

Physcial education

At ELABasel, we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive PE curriculum that not only promotes physical fitness but also nurtures essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and self-discipline.

Through sports, swimming and active play, our students discover the joy of movement and develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. Additionally, our PE lessons are conducted in German, offering students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the language.

All students from Year 2 to Year 5 also benefit from a semester of weekly swimming classes, ensuring they develop not only in their physical capabilities but also in their confidence and safety in the water.

Athletics & sports days

We make full use of Basel’s outstanding local amenities, including nearby sports fields and recreational spaces. These provide the perfect setting for team sports, athletics, and games, helping students develop collaboration, leadership and a sense of fair play. Our annual Sports Days are a highlight of the school calendar, celebrating participation, achievement and community spirit.

Movement & fitness

Our dedicated movement and fitness area provides an excellent space for weekly classes, including sessions led in German. This facility allows pupils to develop strength, coordination and flexibility in a safe, supportive environment that promotes both physical skill and wellbeing

Swimming

Swimming is an important part of our Physical Education programme. By accessing local swimming pools, students gain essential water safety knowledge and confidence in the water while enjoying a diverse and engaging curriculum that promotes lifelong fitness and enjoyment of sport.

Orienteering

Each year, our Year 4 to Year 7 students take part in an exciting orienteering event. Working in teams, pupils navigate a mapped course using their problem-solving skills, collaboration and spatial awareness to locate checkpoints. The activity promotes resilience, independence and a spirit of adventure while encouraging students to enjoy the outdoors and apply their learning in a real-world.

Enrichment

Each semester, our Enrichment Programme offers a variety of fitness-focused clubs designed to keep students active and healthy. Options include Running Club, HIIT Club, and more, giving everyone the chance to find a fun way to stay fit.

Inter-school competitions

Students at our school have the exciting opportunity to take part in inter-school competitions, representing ELA Basel against other schools across Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land. These competitions cover a range of sports, including soccer, athletics, and more, giving students the chance to challenge themselves, develop teamwork, and experience the thrill of friendly rivalry. It’s a fantastic way for students to build confidence, stay active, and connect with peers from other schools in the region.
